Oil Filled Radiator Buying Guide

Brands

Different brands of oil-filled radiators vary slightly in terms of technology, external design and usually price too. We have covered some of the most popular brands for oil-filled radiators below.

De’Longhi

De’Longhi is well known for small appliances and originated in Spain in 1902. Many of the popular models we have featured above are from this brand.

They are regarded for their high quality and are extremely popular amongst home appliances for their comfortable price tags too.

Dimplex

Dimplex is one of United Kingdom’s leading appliance brands and is well known for oil-filled radiators too. The brand is well known for good quality and pleasing aesthetic designs.

Challenge

Challenge is a slightly smaller appliance brand that also produces a variety of radiators. Their models are usually traditional in design and on the lower end of the price scale.

VonHaus

Although the name sounds German, VonHaus is actually a brand that originated, and manufactures, in China. They’re well known for home appliances and kitchen appliances from their sister brand VonShef.

Type

The type of radiator is an important consideration when making your purchase. Let’s take a look at the two most common types.

Freestanding Oil Filled Radiator

Firstly, freestanding versions are very convenient for moving around your home thanks to cables that can be plugged into power them up.

However, some can tend to be a little heavy so look out for the weight before you make your purchase.

Wall Mounted Oil Filled Radiator

Secondly, many homes will have installed wall mounted radiators. These will attach to the main power and gas supply in your home through the wall.

The downside of these is that they can’t be moved around, but they are usually more powerful.

Features

While all heaters and radiators work to warm up the surrounding environment, many additional features can make them even more desirable.

Timer

Timer functions will usually be a 24 set, like many of the models we have featured above. This is excellent for those wanting a heater to keep on for the first few hours of sleep.

Likewise, it’s a great feature for warming up a room while controlling the power you are using for a certain amount of time.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is a useful component of transportable radiators rather than wall mounted versions.

To keep things, even more, eco-friendly, many models include multiple power options with a lower or higher wattage, like an electric heater

Thermostat Temperature Control

As one of the most important features of any radiator, a thermostat allows you to control the temperature to your taste.

These will usually be in the form of a rotary dial and all the models we have featured above include their own thermostat, similar to a panel heater.

Heat Settings

The heat settings of a radiator will change the wattage output from the unit. Most models will have 3 to 4 heat settings with the lowest wattage of around 1200 and the highest of 2500.

If you have the larger room you want to heat them opt for higher heat settings and a higher wattage.

Overheat Protection

Overheat protection is a safety feature that is essential for most environments, particularly those with children or pets around.

In case of overheating, the radiator will automatically switch itself off.

Safety Features

Additional safety features can include automatic safety shut off technology that will stop the machine operating if it’s damaged or if it is knocked over. You will find most modern radiators include this function.

Portable

Luckily, all of the oil-filled radiators we have featured above are portable, but some more than others.

If you’re particularly concerned about transporting your unit, then opt for the De’Longhi TRNS0505M. It is super lightweight and compact.

Running Cost

The running cost of an oil-filled radiator, particularly the cabled ones we have featured above, is low compared to wall mounter alternatives.

They tend to be a cheaper option than wall-mounted radiators too due to their energy efficiency and the fact that you can change the heating power level.

Size

The size of any appliance is important when deciding which one to buy, for the size you have available to store it in as well as the size of the environment you would like it to heat up, like conservatory heaters.

Mini radiators, such as some of the De’Longhi versions we featured above are ideal for personal use due to their small size.

Another plus side of mini radiators is that they will use less power, the same as a halogen heater.

On the other hand, if you would like to heat a larger room then it’s best to opt for a larger model such as the PureMate 2500W with 11 heating fins.

Pricing Range

A last, yet super important, feature to consider is, of course, the price of your new purchase.

Generally speaking, it’s not hard to find a cheap oil-filled heater however a cheaper version will almost always be smaller and less powerful.

The cheapest options start at around 50 pounds and more expensive versions can be just under the 200-pound mark.

While the price doesn’t usually determine the quality, it will affect the number of heat settings, the size and the additional features such as a timer function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Are oil filled radiators safe?
A:

Most appliances, especially those that include oil, have safety concerns. Oil-filled radiators are a much safer option than fan or bar radiators due to their casings for the oil inside.

However, there are risks of oil spillage or leakage which can cause fires and burns.

It’s crucial to look for a heater with overheat protection and automatic shut down technology.

Q: How do oil filled radiators work?
A:

Thanks to their smart designs, oil-filled radiators work in a very energy-efficient way.

An electrical component is submerged into the internal oil inside the unit, and when connected to power this will heat up the surrounding oil. As the oil warms up, heat will be emitted into the surroundings.

The temperatures can be adjusted with the additional thermostats. Lower outputs and changes in wattage will lower the heat provided by the electrical component and therefore the surrounding oil will cool down.
