Electra W1042CF1W 5Kg Washing Machine

Ideal for smaller households, this 5 kg washing machine from Electra is practical and friendly with both the environment and your electricity bills.

Equipped with sensors that weigh the load and allow it to use the optimal amount of water and energy, it has fairly won the A++ energy rating.

Still, it has plenty of other features that make it an excellent choice for those with limited space, including a rich selection of programmes.

The special rinse cycle, Allergy Rinse, is just one of the many details you probably didn’t expect it to have.

Through it all, it does a good job at cramming most of the must-have functionalities into a compact, practical design.

  • Front-load washing machine with a generous selection of 21 wash programmes;
  • Small 3 kg drum capacity but with a welcomed 1300 RPM maximum spin speed;
  • Noise level of 53 dB at wash and 74 dB at spin;
  • A energy rating.

One of the best small appliances for compact kitchens, this 3kg washing machine from Zanussi is ideal for singles or couples who don’t like to let laundry pile up.

Due to the front-load design, it can literally fit any corner, either as a freestanding unit or tucked underneath a counter.

One might say that pretty much everything about it looks and feels miniature, though that’s not a bad thing at all.

If you need a reliable washing machine under 50cm wide, you’ll want to consider this option. Easy to use and as quiet as you’d expect it to be, it cleans without fuss.

What’s more, the 30-minute quick wash programme where you get to adjust the temperature might very well become your favourite.

When you’re living in a small-sized household and laundry day is every other day, a slim washing machine with a 6 kg drum like this one will help you stay both clean and sane.

It gives you plenty of wash programmes to choose from, and even though many of them are lengthy, you still have the 28-minute cycle you can always rely on.

Synthetic fabrics will get their share of love with a dedicated programme, and even the drum will clean itself without you having to do any extra work.

In addition to all these, if you’re concerned about the utility bills, you can always try the programme that saves water usage and energy consumption.

Without a doubt, this is a great product, available at a reasonable price, and, most importantly, ready to fit tight spaces!

Cater-Wash Slim Top Loading Washing Machine 7.5kg

No matter how slim a small washing machine, if it comes with a top-load design, it will help you save even more space.

This model from Cater-Wash does just that, but it over-delivers with an even bigger wash load capacity than you would expect.

It’s not every day that you get to find such a practical design paired with a large drum and an A+++ energy rating, so this is definitely a winner.

You’ll appreciate the possibility to select between four different temperatures and four spin speeds.

Yet the cherry-on-top is the My Cycle, an option that lets you configure and save your favourite cycle for repeated use.

In case you’re wondering, it does feature a 15-minute quick wash option, while the daily wash programme is reasonably set to 45 minutes.

This one might be the one for you!

90 x 40 x 60 cm
56 kg

  • Perfect for small, tight spaces;
  • Excellent drum capacity for its size;
  • Lots of control options built-in;
  • Can save favourite cycle for repeated use.

  • No option to open the door during the wash cycle;
  • No allergy programme.

5. Casart Full-Automatic Small Washing Machine

  • Full-automatic washing machine with top-load and drying function;
  • 3.5 kg wash load capacity;
  • 6 washing programmes and 3 water level options;
  • Intake hose and drainage tube included in the package, requires no installation.

A fully automatic washing machine that can be carried around the house if needed and that can dry clothes is something you won’t want to miss.

This model from Casart will work wonders for those who limit themselves to a tiny apartment or even a dorm.

As long as you’re only aiming for medium or low laundry weight, its 3.5 kg washing capacity may be more than enough for you.

Consider, though, that you can only choose between six programmes: wash, spin, wash-rinse, rinse-spin, wash-rinse-spin, or soak-wash-rinse-spin.

After all, it’s a compact laundry washer/spinner. What you see is what you get!

  • Semi-auto washing machine with top-load and twin-tub design;

Best For Low Budgets
FitnessClub Portable Twin Tub Washing Machine

As a 2-in-1 washer and dryer, this small but surprisingly effective appliance is guaranteed to wow you. For its price tag, it certainly does a good job at washing clothes.

Even though the drying function is limited to a couple of minutes, re-running it will do the trick, and as an energy-saving washing machine, you won’t have to worry about the electricity bill too much.

Expect it to demand your active contribution, though, especially with adding the water and draining it. Still, this is the price you have to pay for getting a spectacularly lightweight washer and dryer.

You can’t compare it with the full-size slim models, that’s for sure.

But this product isn’t meant to compete in that category. Bear in mind that it comes with certain limitations, and you’ll be able to see it for what it truly is and appreciate it accordingly!

60 x 36.5 x 70 cm
13 kg

  • Lightweight and easy to move around;
  • Super-straightforward operation;
  • Eco friendly and energy-saver;
  • Can wash and spin at the same time.

  • Quite limited functionalities;
  • Water pipe is difficult to connect to the tap.

7. Bosch WAB28162GB 1400rpm Washing Machine

  • Automatic washing machine with wide-open front-load;
  • 6 kg drum capacity and 1400 RPM maximum spin speed;
  • Aqua Wash system uses less water;
  • A+++ energy efficiency rating.

Bosch is a name that needs no other introduction, and while this isn’t the smallest small washing machine out there, if you can squeeze it in, you’re going to love it.

The wash load is more than decent even for a small family, not just for singles or couples, and the fact that it features a half-load programme makes it even more valuable.

Still, you’re going to appreciate plenty of other things about it!

Think of all those temperature settings, from 20 to 90 Celsius degrees, the Aqua Wash function that draws the minimum amount of water and heats it rapidly or how dry your clothes will feel after going through the 1400 RPM draining programme.

All these along with a two-year warranty (as opposed to only one year you see in other models) make it a very tempting offer, right?

55 x 60 x 85 cm
68 kg

  • Wide selection of programmes and high spin speed;
  • Extended temperature range;
  • Lets you know how long until the programme ends;
  • Backed by a 2-year warranty for parts and labour.

  • Not necessarily that small;
  • Somewhat sensitive to the water pressure.

Small Washing Machine Buying Guide

Size & Capacity

With limited space, size and capacity matter even more because you’re trying to make the best of what you have.

Look for something with a small depth, a slimline washing machine 40cm in-depth, for instance, representing a more than decent option.

Otherwise, general dimensions vary greatly, the smallest ones having around 60 x 35 x 70 cm and a drum capacity of approximately 3 kg.

The larger ones go up to 6 kg, sometimes even a surprising 7.5 kg if it’s a top-load model.

A regular washing machine’s standard height revolves around 85 cm if it’s a front-load model and 90 cm if it’s a top-load.

With smaller units, the height isn’t necessarily as much diminished, though you should be able to find options at 70-75 cm height.

Width & Depth

Width and depth are the ones that make a difference when you’re searching for a shallow washing machine.

The standard width of a front-load model is 60 cm, but it can go down to 50 cm in the smaller models.

By contrast, the front-load models are already more compact, with 40 cm in width, a value that can go down to 35 cm in a really small washing machine.

As for the depth, which is typically 60 cm with either front or top-load appliances, the changes are more prominent.

A slim depth washing machine can have as little as 35-40 cm.

Noise Level

When you shop for a small washing machine, make sure you know both the washing and the spinning noise levels.

There’s a significant difference between these two, usually of at least 10 dB.

The change in sound energy at ten extra decibels translates into a sound energy increase by a factor of 10, which is quite a lot!

For instance, a good washer may have only 53 dB during the wash cycle.

This is slightly more than the noise you can expect to hear in a library and less than the one from a normal conversation (rated at 60 dB).

But when it gets to the spinning cycle, the 53 dB can quickly turn into 74 dB, which is pretty much the equivalent of a toilet flushing.

The smallest washing machines we’ve reviewed had around 53 – 62 dB at wash and 74 – 80 dB at spin.

Considering that this is an appliance meant to run for hours, its noise level suddenly becomes critical for your comfort.

From a little over 10 kg to almost 70 kg, the most compact washing machines’ weight doesn’t always seem to be influenced by size.

Still, if you want something fairly portable, it will have to be on the lightweight side, at under 20 kg, like a portable washing machine. Anything more, and you can stop calling it portable.

Even the simplest and smallest appliances will give you a couple of pre-set programmes. The difference, however, is granted by the adjustment options.

Features that allow you to tweak the time, temperature and spin speed of a chosen program are desirable.

Suppose any built-in smart sensors allow the washer to weigh the load and adjust the water intake accordingly, even better!

Finally, yet importantly, some compact washers still feature functions that are considered a bit high-end, such as an allergy mode or a self-clean mode for the drum.

Quick wash

The quick wash function is often set to 30 minutes, and an even shorter, 15-minute programme sometimes backs it up.

No quick wash is one of the biggest frustrations a buyer can have.

You don’t want a washing machine that runs for hours regardless of the load’s weight or how dirty the clothes are.

If it also gives you a bit of freedom with adjusting the temperature and the spin speed for the quick wash, it’s an option you shouldn’t ignore.

Spin Speed

Spin speed dictates how wet or dry your clothes will come out of the washer and, consequently, how long you’ll have to wait until you can wear them.

From the minimum 1000 RPM to 1400 RPM, there is no shortage of options.

Pay attention, though, that a higher spin speed also comes with a higher noise level.

High spin speeds with lots of decibels will annoy you at best and prevent you from doing the laundry at late hours at worst.

Only those who’ve had enough of taking stained clothes out of the washer understand the importance of having a pre-soak mode at hand.

If you know that you frequently deal with stubborn stains, don’t settle for a model that doesn’t include this function.

Otherwise, you’ll end up having to run multiple washing cycles, which kind of ruins the point of using an energy-efficient appliance.

Energy Rating

If you’re a large family but you lack the space, you’re going to use your small washing machine more frequently than you’d do with a standard one.

For this reason, it would better be an energy-efficient model and, ideally, save you water in the process.

In theory, this energy rating is calculated by taking into account the annual energy consumption with wash cycles between 60°C and 40°C.

The most efficient units are rated A+++, whereas the most inefficient ones are rated down to G.

Anything from A to A+++ is good, but it’s even better if the appliance comes with fuzzy logic. This technology makes washing more efficient by picking up information from its sensors.

It will then estimate the load weight and the dirt and grease extent, deciding the required amount of water and soap, spin direction, and any need for rebalancing the load during the washing and spinning cycles.

With a high energy rating and smart sensors, you’ll get an eco-friendly washing machine that works the minimum required, delivers the cleanest clothes, and keeps your utility bills to a reasonable level.

Pricing Range

Size and features taken into account, along with the extra features that make a washing machine stand out, prices vary from under £100 to over £400.

The compact, slim models are priced at approximately £150-£200.

Our Verdict

As it turns out, compact washing machines do come in all sizes. The tiny ones are portable, yet they limit the amount you can wash significantly.

By contrast, the small-sized ones typically come with a shallower drum that allows the entire appliance to have a smaller footprint, thus taking up less space in your apartment.

If you have significant space restrictions, you will have to settle for one of the models weighing less than 20 kg.

If you have a bit of wiggle room, you must carefully measure the width and depth of the space where you intend to install it.

Once you’ve settled for the ideal size, pay close attention to the washing programmes and the energy rating.

These two will determine how much you’ll enjoy using it and whether you’ll hate it once you have to pay the utility bills.
